This website includes environemntl DNA (eDNA) from targeted trnl DNA analysis (Jonah Ventures: https://jonahventures.com/honey-pollen/ ) of honey in Puna, Hawai`i Island from fall of 2022--Summer 2023 and Metagenomic environmental DNA (MDA) (Celvia CC AS: https://mda-test.com/en/ ) from around Hawai`i Island from Fall of 2025 through the enad of project funding: https://www.hawaiibeekeeper.org/pollen-studies/edna-data/meta-dna
Sampled Hawai`i honey were sequenced from fresh honey samples (honey taken directly off the fram new comb as bees are capping the honeycomb.
The charts below, from the target trnL sequences, were created from the Exact-Sequence-Variants (ESVs) data that was rectified with USDA and Starr Environmental data on species that are in Hawai`i. There were a few ESVs that did not match either, and consultation with USDA staff revealed they were known Hawai`i chimera that were not identified by the analysis lab. The posted Charts reflect that information.
All identified Genus species were by most likely fit, if a specific species was not identified in the ESVs.
Specific species identified by the ESVs are identified with a capital letter on the common name on the chatrs.
One of the draw-backs with any botanical-source testing in Hawai`i is that we have far more honey plants and far less databases for many of the honey plants, vs most areas that study honey bee botanical-sources.
